Our Roots

It all started at OHIO magazine in the early 1980s.

After amassing a wealth of idiosyncratic facts about the state of Ohio, publisher Marcy Hawley and editor John Baskin joined forces to publish a book called Ohio Matter of Fact. After they learned how to publish one book they thought…why not continue? And thus, Orange Frazer Press was born. Marcy and John went on to publish one book a year until it turned to two books, three, then four, and so on. Before they knew it, Orange Frazer became one of Ohio’s most respected and beloved local publishing companies.

Why “Orange Frazer”

We named our company after a man who lived in our town in the late 1890s where Orange Frazer and his brother, John, ran a downtown grocery for nearly half a century. Orange was a traveler, leaving for distant places wearing his dark suit and carrying a suitcase full of fresh collars. He had a large library, and he liked the company of women but never married. He paid court to the town's first woman doctor for many years, and later, to the local Latin teacher, whom he remembered in his will.
