THE SEARCH FOR LOST HABITATS: 30 Years of Exploring for Rare and Endangered Plants--Book 1

For the past 30 years I have been a nature photographer and amateur botanist. I have been active in organizations involved in preserving the environment, and have been able to explore first-hand, and in some cases report on environmentally fragile habitats. I committed my environmental journeys to writing via articles for the Explorer Magazine (Cleveland, Ohio), Wildflower Magazine (Toronto, Canada) and The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Many of these are collected in The Search for Lost Habitats, my first book.

While factual and accurate and conveying ample scientific information, I write in an accessible and sometimes humorous style, avoiding the technical style of scholarly writing. This comes from my background as a high-school English teacher for over 25 years.

I have called Northeast Ohio home for over 50 years, and have been immersed in its diverse and captivating natural beauty. My early childhood love of nature was nurtured in the small Appalachian town where I grew up. In high school I waxed a bit Thoreauvian and toyed with both the ideas of becoming a park naturalist and a farmer. However, as with Thoreau, a love for the written word eventually propelled me towards a career in writing, and thus my study and teaching of English. Yet my love of nature was never sidelined. For one, my certificate also listed biology. More relevantly, I would assign my English students to three-hour nature walks on which they would report their feelings and observations. The Search for Lost Habitats represents my own three-hour walks through all kinds of habitats, many of which shelter extremely rare and endangered plants. These are captured in over 450 photographs.
